An American historian at the University of Maryland. Her research interests include the history of crimes against humanity, environmental issues, and the societies and cultures of Central Asia. In 2018, she published a book about the famine in Kazakhstan (Asharshylyk), The Hungry Steppe: Famine, Violence, and the Making of Soviet Kazakhstan.
