The Five-Year-Old Girl Who Was Repressed by the Soviets: The Story of Hanna Honcharuk

439

During the Holocaust the Korotyuks rescued their Jewish friends  however later the family suffered Soviet repression.
In 1944, the father, Fedir, was the first to be arrested and sent to the Gulag labour camps. A year later, the mother, Sofiia, was deported to Udmurtia along with their three daughters—Yevheniia, Hanna, and Halyna.

The family was able to reunite only in ten years and returned home to Ukraine in 1960. In 2022, Fedir and Sofiia Korotyuk were posthumously awarded the title of Righteous Among the Nations.

In March 2023, the After the Silence team found their daughter, Hanna Honcharuk, in the village of Richytsia in the Rivne region and recorded her childhood memories of what she had endured. She passed away later that same year.

Together with the NGO After the Silence, we tell Hanna and her family's story as a graphic novel.
